Just Why Do Wedding Photographers Charge So Much?

If you are looking at wedding photography prices, you will no doubt be aware that charges vary wildly.

Years ago the cost of weddings was dependent upon the cost of the film, the processing and the  printing, on to which was added the photographers time on the day, album costs were then added to that.

Nowadays though with the advent of digital it has changed dramatically. Photographers can take literately hundreds of pictures with worrying about the cost of the film. Unfortunately all of these photographs have to be processed, which is something the old film man did not have to do as this was done at the laboratory.

Processing digital images involves colour correction, cropping, and removing any blemishes which may detract from the picture, blemishes could be caused by marks on the camera lens or the camera sensor (most professionals keep their cameras scrupulously clean but when they are working in a fast paced environment like a wedding it is sometimes impossible to prevent accidental finger prints or dust from reaching the lens). Photographers skilled in the use of Photoshop and other software can also remove obstacles from the picture that may have been impossible to move on the day (like lampposts or overhanging branches Etc.) I have even completely removed a car from the background of my pictures more than once.

Obviously this processing takes a time that the old film photographer would not have to bother with. So you see the modern digital wedding photographer will not only charge for his time at the wedding but also this processing time afterwards, and this can be considerable, with anything up to 400 photographs or more to go through. Even if he were to do each photo in 1 minute that would still put nearly 7 hours onto the time of the wedding.

So although the cost of digital prints is lower, the time spent on them still has to be covered.

So even though it may seem expensive to you, the hourly rate charged today by all but the most famous photographers is actually lower than it was 20 years ago.

Camera equipment is also a major consideration, older professional film cameras were capable of taking a lot of abuse without complaining, but modern digital cameras cost more even allowing for inflation, and are a lot fussier; dust on the sensor and damp in the electronics can be expensive, demanding that cameras need to be serviced regularly just like your car.

It all adds up!
